Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time - September 5, 2010
CREATIVITY AND DIGNITY AT WORK
When God created man, He gave each a task to multiply and subdue the earth (Gen 1:28). The Pope John Paul II rejected contemporary materialistic trends which reduce a human being to a lifeless machine. He reminds us that: “man's work concerns not only the economy but also, and especially, personal values” (LE 15). He also disapproved of classifying work as creative or noncreative; nor as appropriate for a free person or slave. These types of categorizations existed since antiquity, were valid in the Greco-Roman world, and were held to be true even in Christianity which failed to break free from them for centuries. For many generations only masterpieces of art like painting, sculpture, or literature were deemed worthy of being called creative work.
As a result of the above misconceptions about work, many people today still treat their activities quite mechanically and superficially. They evaluate them purely in terms of gain and immediate effects, while renouncing creativity and higher aspirations. The Pope believes that creative work needs an appropriate system of values, symbols, and meanings, because all the elements that constitute a human being - material and spiritual, temporary and eternal - are involved in the creative process. Every human being created in God’s image and likeness has been equipped with these elements as a person. God and humanity become partners in the creative process since God invites us to share in His creative work. Those who attain a high level of spiritual development are capable of creating material goods of the highest quality.
Regardless of the level of technological development, however, a person with his or her creative potential remains the only one to inspire, create, recreate, renew, perfect, and enrich all the various facets and spheres of life: material and spiritual, personal and social. Creativity, namely, is the most unique gift of God to humanity. Pilgrimage to the National Mary’s Shrine in Washington, DC
